7th International Conference on Geomorphology
6 - 11 July 2009
You may have seen this Conference advertised for the 7 - 12 July, the dates have changed to the 6 - 11 July 2009
Welcome
Welcome to Melbourne and welcome to the 7th International Conference of the International Association of Geomorphologists. We have a couple of “firsts” to celebrate at this conference. This is the first time the International Conference on Geomorphology has been held in the southern hemisphere since the series began nearly 30 years ago and this is the first conference to be held in Melbourne's new Conference Centre. While we are on this topic, this is also only the second time the conference has been held in the eastern hemisphere (the last time being in Japan in 2001).
While the conference is being held in Melbourne, Australia, your host here is the Australian and New Zealand Geomorphology Group, an international collaboration that is unique in the IAG. In this conference you will have the opportunity to learn about the geomorphology of both Australia and New Zealand. While these two countries are physically and socially close, they display contrasting geomorphological conditions. While you are here we hope you will take the opportunity to visit across the Tasman as well.
We have a large program of scientific papers, both oral and poster, in 37 theme sessions. While most of these themes are familiar to you from previous Geomorphology conferences, there are some, such as the Geomorphology of Armed Conflict and Terrestrial Laser Scanning, that are new to the program. The working groups of the IAG are reporting their work over the past 4 years in the sessions of this conference.
The local organising committee, made up of both Australian and New Zealand members of the ANZGG, have devoted large amounts of their time over the last four years to organising and promoting this conference. There is a lot of work involved in organising an international conference, a sometimes frustrating process similar to herding cats, but the reward of being able to welcome you all to Downunder makes it all worthwhile. From the time when we first decided to bid for the right to stage this conference we have been strongly supported by the Melbourne Convention and Visitors Bureau and on behalf of the organising committee I would like to thank them for their ongoing support. I also wish to thank our professional conference organisers, Tour Hosts Pty Ltd, for their tireless efforts on our behalf in making this conference a success. Thank you also to all those who have contributed to this conference by organising field trips, arranging Young Geomorphologists meetings and the large range of other tasks that have needed to be done. Thank you also to our sponsors for their support and encouragement in the staging of this conference.
Melbourne is an exciting cosmopolitan city and no matter where you come from, you will find someone from your country already here and serving the food and drinks of your homelands. Enjoy!
