International Association: The International Association of Geomorphologists/ Association Internationale des Géomorphologues
The International Association of Geomorphologists / Association Internationale des Géomorphologues (IAG/AIG) is a scientific, non-governmental and non-profit organisation whose principal objectives are development and promotion of Geomorphology as a science through international co-operation and dissemination of knowledge of geomorphology. The IAG/AIG was founded at the Second International Conference on Geomorphology in Frankfurt/Main (Germany) in 1989 in order to strengthen international geomorphology. The IAG fulfils its aim through the establishment of working groups and task forces, organisation of conferences, publication activity and information exchange. Membership of the IAG/AIG is normally by countries.
Previous International Conferences have been held in Manchester (1985), Frankfurt (1989), Hamilton (1993), Bologna (1997), Tokyo (2001), and Zaragoza (2005).
The current study groups of the IAG are:
- Applied Geomorphological Mapping
- Arid Regions
- Geoarchaeology
- Geomorphology and Earth System Science
- Geomorphosites
- Global Change and Geomorphology
- Human Impact on the Landscape
- Geomorphological Hazards
- Large Rivers
- Planetary Geomorphology
- Sediment Budgets in Cold Regions
- Small Catchments
- Carpatho-Balkan-Dinaric Regional Group
The IAG/AIG has provided support for young geomorphologists, especially from developing countries, to attend conferences and training courses.
In addition, the IAG/AIG has worked with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) to advise on geomorphological sites for World Heritage designation.
The IAG/AIG has been active in encouraging the publication of special issues of major journals and a number of books on such topics as Geomorphology and Global Change, Applied Geomorphological Mapping, Geomorphological Hazards and Disaster Reduction, Rock Breakdown, Geomorphosites and on the world's major geomorphological sites. The IAG/AIG regularly disseminates news through its Newsletter and its website.
