Program
The Intensive Course for Young Geomorphologists (ICYG) is traditionally held after each IAG meeting to enable students and early career researchers to meet experts from different areas of geomorphology, share their experiences with people who are at a similar education or career stage and, see some exciting and different landscapes in the host country. The program for the 2009 ICYG includes a 1-day seminar held in Melbourne and, a 3-day field trip to coastal and desert areas of western Victoria. Details are provided below. The maximum number of participants is limited to 40, so an early registration is advisable.
Itinerary:
Sunday 12 July: 1-day seminar
The seminar day will be held at the University of Melbourne, a short walk from the city centre. Eight speakers, who are luminaries of the various fields of geomorphology, have been invited to give informal presentations on their careers, highlights and where they see the future gaps and opportunities in teaching and research (speakers yet to be confirmed). It is intended that the day will provide significant mentoring opportunities, as well as foster strong relationships between young geomorphologists and prominent, influential academics in their fields. The day will conclude with drinks and nibbles, followed by an organised dinner at one of the restaurants along the renowned Lygon Street in Carlton.
Monday 13 July to Wednesday 15 July: 3-day field trip to the Great Ocean Road, western Victorian deserts and the Murray River
A 3-day field trip will be conducted across the western part of Victoria, focusing on the coastal and semi-arid regions of southeastern Australia. We will travel by coach from Melbourne, first along the Great Ocean Road to view coastal landscapes including picturesque beaches and the giant erosional rock formations known as the Twelve Apostles. Overnight accommodation will be provided in the seaside town of Port Fairy. Day two will see us head north into the drier desert areas, passing through volcanic plains and the Grampians National Park to Murray-Sunset National Park, with stops on-route to view Aboriginal rock art, desert dunes, salt lakes, and abundant wildlife such as emus and kangaroos. Overnight accommodation will be at a research station on the edge of the Murray-Sunset National Park, including a traditional aussie barbecue dinner. On our final day we’ll head west to Swan Hill via Lake Tyrell, to see one of the largest inland rivers in Australia, the Murray River, before returning to Melbourne in the afternoon. Drop-offs at Melbourne airport may be possible.
Accommodation and meals:
Four nights accommodation will be provided as part of the course, commencing on the evening of the final day of the conference (Saturday 11 July). For the first two nights (Saturday and Sunday) participants will be housed in single or shared rooms at one of the residential halls at the University of Melbourne. On the third night (Monday), accommodation will be in quad-share rooms at a lodge in Port Fairy. On the final night (Tuesday), accommodation will be on a multi-shared basis at the Mallee Research Station, Walpeup. Accommodation in Melbourne for the night of Wednesday 15 July is not included in the course registration but can arranged, if requested. At all venues, amenities are clean but basic. Participants will need to bring sleeping bags and all personal items. Most meals will be provided as part of the course registration, however on a few occasions, participants will need to purchase their own.
Cost:
The registration fee of A$425.00 per person covers most costs for the course, unless otherwise indicated. Typical additional expenses include snacks, personal items and souvenirs.
